About the Bird: Horned Grebes nest along lakes and ponds across the Great Plains and into the boreal forest of western Canada. According to Audubon's climate modeling, the Horned Grebe could lose 80 percent of its current summer range if temperatures continue to rise at the current rate. The species also spends its winters at sea where climate change has already affected food quality and availability.
About the Artist: An artist since an early age, Giannina Gutierrez was born in Colombia and raised in Queens, New York, where she went on to major in fine art at the Pratt Institute. Through her work, Giannina explores the dynamics of universal, spiritual, and human experience using vibrant palettes and textures. Her love of environment and form is evident through her bold shapes and treatment of media. “I chose the Horned Grebe for its striking appearance,” she says. “With its fiery eyes and mohawk-like feathers, this bird strikes me as a rebel. He refuses to be endangered.”
