Nov 13, 2015: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — Weng Chun and I spent the day in a patch of lowland forest called Hutan Lipur Sungai Chongkak outside of Kuala Lumpur. We had a good rush of birds in the first couple of hours, then activity slowed during the afternoon. A thunderstorm eventually shut things down completely and day’s end saw us sprinting out of the forest in a downpour.
Two of my most-wanted small kingfishers, a Rufous-backed Dwarf-Kingfisher and a Blue-banded Kingfisher, put in appearances today, along with a surprise Pin-tailed Parrotfinch (usually seen on seeding bamboo plants). As always, I entered these sightings into eBird; you can see a few of my photos from today here.
This was my last full day in peninsular Malaysia and I’ve reached the bottom of the barrel on easy birds around here. It’s just getting too hard to find new ones! Time to move onward—to Borneo in the morning…
