About the Bird: In the forests of northeastern North America, Black-throated Blue Warblers spend their summers sifting through the understory in search of insects. At 3 degrees of warming, practically all of their breeding habitat could become unlivable—versus retaining half at 1.5 degrees.
About the Artist: Richard Alexander Caraballo, a.k.a. minusbaby, was raised in the Lower East Side and Spanish Harlem neighborhoods of New York City. He studied at and dropped out of the Cooper Union’s art school, and in the years since, has built a strong reputation as an influential pixel artist, internationally recognized lo-fi electronic musician, and medium-defying collaborator. The migration of the Black-throated Blue Warbler from the northeastern United States to the Caribbean at the onset of chilly weather parallels his grandmother’s own trips from NYC to her native Puerto Rico and back. “The symbols—at once familiar, but essentially indecipherable—reference its calls and song,” he says of the mural. “I have a thing for black, white, and blue, too.”
