Audubon Events Marking Earth Day 2023

Across the Audubon network, state offices and chapters are marking Earth Day on and around April 22.

Around the Audubon network, state offices and chapters are marking Earth Day on and around April 22 as a special day to celebrate birds and wildlife. Here are some highlights from around the country. Events will be added as needed:  

Phoenix, AZ

Los Angeles, CA

  • 4/20/23: The Audubon Center at Debs Park will host a community bird walk at Rio de Los Angeles State Park on Thursday, April 20 from 8:30 am to 10:00 am. Meet near the flag poles, bring water, comfortable shoes, hats, and bincoulars if you have them. There will be some binoculars and field guides to borrow.

Maitland, FL

  • 4/22/23: The Audubon Center for Birds of Prey will hold a very special party for the planet this Earth Day! On Saturday, April 22 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, there will be bird meet-and-greets and extra family fun, all included in regular admission or with your annual pass. There will be Earth-friendly games, tree plantings, scavenger hunts around the Center, and guided tours of the Center throughout the day. Space is limited and tours are first come, first served.

Naples, FL

  • 4/22/23: Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary will host a special meet-and-greet from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm with author Susan Sachs Levine! Susan will be signing copies of her book, Jenny’s First Catch, a beautifully illustrated children’s story about a young Roseate Spoonbill learning to fish with her unique bill. The Earth Day event will also include a Roseate Spoonbill information station, guided walks, and music by the HUGS ukelele band.

Lawrence, KS

  • 4/22/23: The Jayhawk Audubon Society will be in South Park for the 53rd Earth Day celebration from 1:00 - 3:00 pm. There will be a wide range of fun crafts, activities, and information available about our planet’s amazing natural resources and how we can protect them. Jayhawk Audubon Society will have information on World Migratory Bird Day and the importance of water for birds, bird feeder painting, and fishing line cleanup information.

Covington, LA

  • 4/21/23: The Orleans Audubon Society will table at the Northshore Garden Show and Plant Sale at the Covington Fairgrounds from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. They will be selling native plants to raise money for their Plants for Birds mission, andwill have educational materials displayed that educate about natives, birds, and climate change.

Detroit, MI

  • 4/22/23: Green Day at the Belle Isle Nature Center. Join MI Birds for Green Day at the Belle Isle Nature Center. This free celebration features outdoor activities, nature hikes, earth-friendly crafts and opportunities to participate in community science initiatives that support clean waterways. 11:00 am-3:00 pm.

     

Gladwin County, MI

  • 4/20/23: Woodcock Walk in Gladwin County. Join the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Ruffed Grouse Society, and MI Birds (a program of Audubon Great Lakes) on a guided hike to observe one of Michigan’s early spring spectacles, the American woodcock courtship dance. All ages are welcome. Attendees must bring their own binoculars and headlamp or flashlight. Spare binoculars will be provided if needed. Marquette, MI

  • 4/22/23: Birds and Brews at Ore Dock Brewing Company. Meet fellow birders, and learn about the importance of our public lands to birds — all while enjoying a complimentary drink on us. Guests will enjoy a presentation on MI Birds, two rounds of “Jeopardy” style bird trivia, bird coloring pages for kids, and door prizes. Win a Sibley bird guide or pair of Nikon binocs! There will also be plenty of birding stories. 5:00 p.m.

  • 4/22/23: An Earth Day Celebration with Seeds of Caring will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Grange Insurance Audubon Center. During the event families are invited to participate in multiple projects to help kids ages 2-12 take action in protecting our environment and investing in our planet’s future. Nonprofit partners will be on site to educate kids on environmental stewardship actions and Grange Insurance Audubon Center will have a seedball station, indoor bird scavenger hunt and bee keeping station! 

Audubon, PA

  • 4/23/23: Earth Day Celebration at the John James Audubon Center. Join us for an Earth Day celebration featuring container planting demos with native plants, kids’ activities, partner organizations, canoe rides, and more!Our monthly page turning of The Birds of America will get things started, then be sure to visit our Annual Native Plant Sale. Museum admission is free all day! Most timed activities do not require registration. However, if you would like to join a guided canoe ride, please email millgrove@audubon.org to register in advance. Space is limited and will fill up quickly.
